Music Education for All

Music education brings benefits to those involved. Six key drivers will enable as many people as possible to enjoy those benefits:

  • The importance of a broad definition of education: experiences which further knowledge, skills, attitudes, values or dispositions
  • Recognising the wide range of purposes for which music is made and learned, enabling humans to flourish
  • The wide range of learners involved in music education, and the importance of their voices being heard: all ages, from new-borns to centenarians; all conditions, including adults with dementia, children in challenging circumstances
  • The wide range of providers of music education: schools, music services,  orchestras, opera and ballet companies, private music teachers, community musicians,  specialist music organisations, and others
  • The importance of a plurality of music that people can identify with
  • And an understanding of why music education for all is so important: because music making is a fundamental human right; and because it is a powerful benefit to those taking part.

Music Education for All runs both through and between all of the topics. It sets the tone for the work of all the groups and supports them in working collaboratively.

Under its banner of Music Education for All, the Music Education Council will

  • Produce discussion documents
  • Provide summaries of key documents
  • Facilitate further professional dialogue across the sector
